History of Hammond Transport:
In 1952 Bill Hammonds uncle, Bob, returned from Korea and bought a carrying business which consisted of one truck. As Upper Hutt grew, more freight came here, and Bob needed more vehicles. In the 1950s and 1960s many industries expanded, moved, or started up in Upper Hutt including Dunlop's, General Motors, Feltex, Repco, Steel Care, and STC.
In 1966 Bob’s brothers, Bruce and Ken, bought out Upper Hutt Transport. It had just two trucks and was an Upper Hutt to Wellington transport service.
In 1972 Ken and Bruce divided the company. Bruce kept the name Upper Hutt Transport and Ken started the Upper Hutt Carrying Company. The combined companies had eight trucks and trailers.
In 1982 Ken decided to purchase a vehicle with a Hiab loading crane attached to the back as he often experienced difficulty or delays having his trucks loaded and unloaded. The same year, Bob sold out to his nephew and owner today, Bill Hammond, who took over the contract with TNT.
In 1987 Ken and Bruce retired and their businesses were bought out by Ken's sons Bill and Richard, who changed the company name to Hammond Brothers. When TNT withdrew from New Zealand, Bill had other work opportunities lined up and found the transition easier than other operators who relied solely on TNT. Bill advanced into furniture removals as it appeared there was a need for the company to specialise. The family say it's so gratifying to hear clients still mention that Hammonds have moved their parents and grandparents.
In 1998 Bill and Richard formed separate companies, Bill as Hammond Transport and Richard as Hammond Crane & Cartage, which brings us to the familiar face of Hammond Transport today. Hammond Transport specialise in general carry for the North Island as well as furniture removals and storage soloutions for the Wellington region.
